応用レベル（TOEIC L&R TEST 730～ / 英検準１級）
通常、英語の語順は ＜主語 ＋（助）動詞＞ ですが、述語動詞や目的語、補語、副詞語句などが主語の前に置かれることがあります。これを『倒置』といいます。
強調のための倒置
文の一部を強調したい時にその部分を文頭に置くことがあります。その場合は語順が ＜動詞 + 主語＞ や ＜助動詞 + 主語 + 動詞＞ となることが多いです。
副詞（句）を文頭に出す場合
方向や場所などを表す副詞（句）を文頭に置いて ＜副詞 + 動詞 + 主語＞ の語順にします。主語が代名詞の場合には倒置はせずに、副詞が文頭に出て ＜副詞 + 主語 + 動詞＞ となります。
Away went the car at full speed.
その車は、全速力で走り去った。
＝ The car went away at full speed.
Down came the heavy rain suddenly.
突然、強い雨が降ってきた。
＝ The heavy rain came down suddenly.
Away they didn’t stay from school without reason.
彼らは学校をずる休みしたのではない。
＝ They didn’t stay away from school without reason.
否定語を文頭に出す場合
否定的な意味の言葉を文頭に置いて ＜否定語 + 動詞 + 主語＞ の語順にします。現在と過去の一般動詞を含む文の場合は ＜否定語 + do (does / did) + 主語 + 動詞＞となります。
Never in my life have I been to Spain.
生まれてこの方、一度もスペインに行ったことがない。
＝ I have never been to Spain in my life.
Little did I dream that my brother would become a surgeon.
私の弟が外科医になるなんて、夢にも思わなかった。
＝ I little dreamed that my brother would become a surgeon.
補語・目的語を文頭に置く場合
補語や目的語を文頭に置き ＜補語 or 目的語 + 動詞 + 主語＞ の語順にします。主語が代名詞の場合には倒置はせずに ＜補語 or 目的語 + 主語 + 動詞＞ となります。
Great is the power of love. 【補語】
愛の力は実に大きい。
＝ The power of love is great.
Not a single sound we could hear. 【目的語】
物音ひとつ聞こえなかった。
＝ We couldn’t hear a single sound.
His boss’s work and duty, he takes over. 【目的語】
彼は、彼の上司の仕事と義務を引き継ぐ。
＝ He takes over his boss’s work and duty.
慣用による倒置
よく使う倒置の慣用表現には以下のものがあります。程度の高い Reading で出てきます。
so, neither, nor 「～もまた」を表現する場合
全て「～もまた」と訳します。肯定形と否定形があります。
All the windows were locked, and so were the doors.
窓は全部鍵がかかっていたし、ドアも鍵がかかっていた。
＝ All the windows were locked, and the doors were also locked.
He doesn’t like carrots, and neither do I.
彼は人参が嫌いだ、私もまた嫌いだ。
＝ He doesn’t like carrots. I don’t like carrots, either.
The tale of Genji is so long, nor have I read it all.
源氏物語はとても長くて、最後まで読んだことがない。
＝ The tale of Genji is so long, and I have never read it all.
仮定法で if を省略する場合 （発展レベル）
if を省略する場合は ＜Were (Should / Had) + 主語＞ の語順となります。
Were it not for him, the project would be failed.
彼がいなければこの計画は失敗していただろう。
＝ If it were not for him, the project would be failed.
Should it rain tomorrow, the plans will be canceled.
もし明日雨が降ったら、予定は中止になる。
＝ If it should rain tomorrow, the plans will be canceled.
